On August 14, 1981, in Kumasi, Ashanti, this African wrestler and former WWE Champion was born. Kwame and Nana Akua are his siblings. He is the son of Kwasi and Elizabeth Sarkodie-Mensah.

Kofi Mensah graduated from Winchester High School in the Boston region when his family relocated to the United States.

Independent Circuit (2005 – 2006)

In late 2005, Kingston began training for a professional wrestling career, and in 2006, he made his professional debut. His debut wrestling promotion was Chaotic Wrestling, where he lost the PWF Mayhem Heavyweight Championship to Evan Siks.

World Wrestling Entertainment

Kofi Kingston signed a developmental contract in September 2006 and was to Deep South Wrestling (DSW).  Initially, his ring name was Kofi Nahaje Kingston and later was shortened to Kofi Kingston.

His first WWE main roster debut was against Charlie Haas in a dark match. After the new WWE promotion, Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), he was then assigned there as a Kofi Kingston.

He is the first African to perform in a WWE promotion in history. Kingston’s debut on ECWwith a win against David Owen on January 22, 2008.

 

 Championship Reigns

The Intercontinental Championship was Kofi’s first championship, which he won against Chris Jericho at the Night of Champions. With this victory, he became the first African wrestler to win a WWE championship title. On SummerSlam, he was defeated by Santino Marella for the title.

The World Tag Team Championship was later won by Kofi and CM Punk. They won the World Tag Team Championship in a championship match against Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase.

At a live event on December 13, this team lost their title to John Morrison and The Miz. Kingston was slated to fight for the World Heavyweight Championship title in an Elimination Chamber match on February 15, 2009.

Due to Edge’s ambush, he was replaced by Edge, who went on to win the World Heavyweight Championship. Kofi Kingston won a triple threat match to become the United States Championship’s top challenger. He won his first United States Championship title after fighting Montel Vontavious Porter.

The New Day

One of the best things that happened in Kofi Kingston’s career was the founding of New Day. Big E, Xavier Woods, and Kofi Kingston made up the three-man squad. On November 28, the team made their debut, defeating Curtis Axel, Heath Slater, and Titus O’Neil.

At Extreme Rules, Kofi Kingston and Big E defeated Tyson Kidd and Cesaro to win the WWE Tag Team Championship.

They even defended their belts against Kidd and Cesaro, The Ascension, Los Matadores, The Lucha Dragons, and The Prime Time in an Elimination Chamber match.
